CMCA L2L3/7: Narrative development (niv intermédiaire)2 ECTS, Semestre S2, MI2-CMCA-S2 Equipe enseignante: Sabine MIRLESSE Narrative Development and Interdisciplinary Critique (Crit Sessions & the Story of your work) This course is an open space for inter-sectorial, and thus interdisciplinary, feedback on your research, presentation style, and artistic reflection. It is an opportunity to see how creative colleagues from scenography critique your video work, and how colleagues working in painting and printed image contemplate your textile design. We are often educated according to medium, and this class seeks to transcend that academic organisation and find the surprising common threads between vastly different materials and techniques through how you tell your story. Emphasis will be placed on dialoguing in a constructive way, keeping an open mind, questioning one’s a priori, and making certain that the atmosphere remains sensitive to and respectful of all practices. It is a classic anglosaxon approach to weekly critique sessions — students will bring in their work in progress and we will discuss the ideas as they are in evolution— give suggestions, ask questions, offer constructive feedback to help each artist and designer and get outside of their own head a bit and have some sense of the material’s reception, plurality, and possible futures. It is equally a safe space— where no work will be torn down but will be looked at with possibility, addressing real world applications, and economic realities in considering the destination for the work. It is equally a space to explore the way we talk about our work, how narrative is constructed and deconstructed, based on the idea that every work is a story unfolding. Considerations will include but not be limited to how our presentation style fluctuates depending on who our audience is, including discussing how to easily adapt to who your interlocutor is and the given environment (from various art professionals to people who have nothing to do with that world). Course will be structured around conversation and therefore ATTENDANCE IS IMPERATIVE, and counts for the majority of your grade with few possibility to make up for it by written assignments because of the oral nature of the subject matter and the need to exchange with your colleagues. Weekly presentations of work in progress followed by discussion and exercises aimed to improve one’s ability to spontaneously talk about their work will be the main structure of the class. We also touch on the preparation of more formal proposals. C'est l'occasion de voir comment des collègues créatifs de la scénographie critiquent votre travail vidéo, et comment des collègues travaillant dans le domaine de la peinture et de l'image imprimée contemplent votre design textile. Nous sommes souvent éduqués en fonction du médium, et ce cours cherche à transcender cette organisation académique et à trouver les surprenants points communs entre des matériaux et des techniques très différents à travers la manière dont vous racontez votre histoire. L'accent sera mis sur le dialogue constructif, l'ouverture d'esprit, la remise en question des a priori, et la nécessité de veiller à ce que l'atmosphère reste sensible et respectueuse de toutes les pratique. C’est une approche anglo-saxonne/americaine classique des sessions hebdomadaires de critique - les étudiants apporteront leur travail en cours et nous discuterons des idées au fur et à mesure de leur évolution collectivement- nous donnerons des suggestions, poserons des questions, offrirons un retour constructif pour aider chaque artiste et designer à sortir un peu de sa propre tête et à avoir une idée de la réception du matériau, de sa pluralité et de ses futurs possibles.
